MAKE: Dino iPhone Tripod


So, if you know me, you know 2 things about me:
1 - I love my iPhone and anything Apple
2 - I love dinosaurs

Needless to say, this is the perfect combo of the 2, is it not?  I have a plethora of iPhone tripods around.  And I had these dino-butts laying around since this project, so I decided this would be the perfect opportunity to utilize them!

You will need:
The butt of a dinosaur (mine are from the dollar store)
Caulking
A suction cup
Paint brush

Use a utility knife to cut your dino in half.  Hopefully, yours are hollow like mine were (otherwise, no part of this project will work!)




Inject your dino butt with the caulking.  Use your finger to make sure the caulking is packed in tightly.


Stick your suction cup in the wet caulking.  Set your phone against it to make sure you're putting the suction cup in at the right angle.  Use a paint brush to remove any overflow caulking between the dino butt and the suction cup.


Next, dab a little caulking on the bottoms of the feet and tail.  If you don't do this, the dino will slide backwards every time your phone is resting on it.  The caulking gives it enough grip to sit still.


Unfortunately, since there is so much caulking inside the dino, this will take a few days to dry properly... about 4-5 days.  It's worth it, though, for how inexpensive, unique and fun this is!

    This is too cute! I have trouble enough keeping the kids from stealing my phone, but at least this would help me find it after they drop it under the table.

    I absolutely love this! The stuffing of the caulking into the dino-butt is a little disturbing...like a surgical enhancement gone wrong...but I get it and it's great! Thanks for sharing!

    This is cool, but why limit yourself to calling it an iPhone holder, when it clearly works for all smartphones?

    How cool is this!! Love it!! You could even use these as little hooks in the bathroom or stick a screw in the back instead of a suction pad and funk up a set of kids drawers (probably safer to use less pointy tails for young kids though)

    Hey has anyone actually done this? I am in a tough spot because I have committed to leading a craft program for this. I can't get it to work!! The caulk won't dry. Please help!

    I have not tried this but maybe you could fill the Dino butt with some sort of filler before using caulk so the dry time is less? Small Styrofoam packing beads?

    The most significant design change was that I made the charger plug hole in to a wedge shape to grip the charging lead. Phone holder for bed

    Just curious if anyone has tried this yet? How long did it take the caulk to dry? I just did one today and am hoping it'll be ready for a Christmas present at the end of the week. It was also super messy for me for some reason.

    I was wondering if any one has done this yet and if the caulk actually worked? I just did one today and am hoping that it'll dry in time for Christmas. It was a bit messier than I thought it would be. Do you think filling it with hot glue would work or would that just pull out once it's dried?
